The ACA (sometimes referred to as Obamacare) is a United States (US) Healthcare law signed into law in 2010. Its purposes are to increase access to health insurance in the US and mitigate rising costs to consumers.
A major provision of the ACA is the creation of public marketplaces where people can compare health plans. These marketplaces include high-quality subsidized plans for individuals whose incomes or employment status preclude access to insurance otherwise. There is an ACA health insurance marketplace in every US state, for example Covered California or New York State of Health.
The other primary means by which the ACA seeks to improve health insurance options is consumer protection. It prevents insurers from limiting the dollar amount of coverage a person can receive in a year. It also prohibits insurers from denying coverage to individuals with pre-existing conditions. Since the ACA’s passage, the uninsured rate in the US has reached an all-time low of about 7% in the early 2020s.
